How to care for and Extend the Life of Your Frames and Glasses
Below are several guidelines and tips that will enable you to care for and maintain your favorite glasses so you can enjoy them as long as you want:
Always Clean Your Glasses.
It is best to stay natural when cleaning eyewear by using warm water. A DIY solution of lukewarm water and a little dishwashing soap can also be used to clean frames. Rinse off your glasses well with bottled water and pat them dry with a lint-free microfiber cloth, being careful not to rub and potentially scratch them.
Do not use unfiltered water, be it rain, lake water or salt water (when at the beach), regular towels or cloths, shirt sleeve, napkin, paper towel, tissue or toilet paper to rinse, wipe or dry your glasses, as they contain small fibers and lint particles which will stick to your wet lenses and can cause scratches.
Avoid using saliva, household cleaners or any glass cleaner with ammonia or alcohol content to clean your glasses and always wash your hands before cleaning. Your saliva and hands contain bacteria and natural oils which can counteract the cleaning process. Household cleaners, ammonia or alcohol can ruin the special coatings on your lenses and cause damage to the eyes.
Properly Handle Your Frames
Avoid stretching or bending your frames when removing them, as they may go out of shape. Try removing and putting on your glasses with both hands, so as to ensure neither side gets stretched out. A specific arm of your frame can loosen quickly over time and become slanted and misaligned if you constantly remove your glasses by grabbing it from that particular side.
Using Separate Protective Case for Every Pair of Glasses
Do not put your glasses on your head or toss them naked in your backpack or purse when not wearing them. Always keep your glasses side up and in separate, hard-sided protective cases so as to avoid mini accidents that can break them or scratch your lenses.
Keep Glasses Away from Extremely Hot Areas
Never leave your glasses in a car even if they’re in a case. The higher temperature in your car can significantly disfigure your glasses.
Having a spare pair of glasses and constantly alternating them, prevents them from getting worn out quickly. Develop a habit of cleaning, rinsing and storing your sunglasses in the same place every time you take them off. This will ensure they last longer than you can imagine.
